Get A Pet Instead
2018 — Art Rotterdam, Intersections (with Milk)

Get a Pet Instead is an interactive installation that questions the integrity of an art fair. In collaboration with the nearby animal shelter, the value of art is being compared to the value of pets. By making these animals part of an art fair, and presenting them as works of art, can the artist change their status and values? The fair visitors are offered a playful yet shady choice: buying a pet from the shelter or a work from one of the neighbors. From a furnished gallery booth, there are daily performance tours to the shelter across the Schie river. This sheds light on the contrast of the commercial art market versus the non-profit animal shelter, which functions as a symbol for integrity, spontaneity and autonomy that art should have.
