In 1647 werd in een kleurrijk dorpje aan de voet van de Franse Pyreneeën de filosoof Pierre Bayle geboren. Toen hij 34 was moest hij vanwege vervolging om zijn denkwijze uitwijken naar Rotterdam, waar hij tot zijn dood in 1706 niet meer wegging. Inmiddels is Pierre Bayle een beroemd filosoof waar Frankrijk trots op is; zijn geboortestad is later deels naar hem vernoemd.
Na drie eeuwen maakt hij de reis alsnog, als Pierre Bel in het lichaam van Maarten. Hoe is de wereld veranderd? Wat betekent hij nog voor zijn dorp? Hoe zal men op zijn terugkeer reageren? Om deze vragen beantwoord te krijgen bewandelt hij vijf dagen lang de grond van Carla-Bayle, voert gesprekken met de dorpsbewoners, bezoekt een colloquium en filmt bovendien alles wat hij tegenkomt, vanaf zijn onverwachte terugkomst tot zijn onvermijdelijke, eeuwige vertrek. Tenslotte worden de beelden van zijn bliksembezoek deel van een tentoonstelling in zijn eer.

Pierre Bel is een performance waarin het contact met de directe omgeving van Pierre Bayle, hoewel driehonderd jaar later, de basis vormt voor een dialoog over de invloed van Bayle in 2019. De performance maakt deel uit van een groepstentoonstelling met kunstenaars uit Carla-Bayle en Rotterdam, om de herinnering aan de filosoof levend te houden.

In a scenic village at the foot of the French Pyrenees, philosopher Pierre Bayle was born in 1647. At age 34 his beliefs forced him to seek refuge from religious persecution in his homeland. He fled to Rotterdam, where he spent the rest of his life – never once returning to France. These days, Pierre Bayle is regarded as a man ahead of his time; his place of birth has been named after him later on.
In light of the current change in consensus regarding his legacy, Pierre decides to pay one last visit to Carla-Bayle in the body of Maarten Bel. What has changed and what has remained the same? Are his ideas still relevant to the world? How will the villagers respond to his return? To answer these questions, Pierre Bel walks the streets of France for five days, engaging in conversation with the citizens, attending a colloquium and recording everything he encounters, from his unexpected return to his inevitable, perpetual departure. Ultimately, the images of his final visit are made part of an exhibition in his honor.

Pierre Bel is a performance in which the contact with Bayle’s direct surroundings, even though three centuries later, forms the foundation of a dialogue about what remains of his influence in 2019. The performance is part of a group exhibition with artists from Carla-Bayle as well as Rotterdam, to keep the memory of a great philosopher alive.
