Maarten Bel’s work is inspired by his daily activities. He observes and collects impressions, situations and objects. The resulting personal archive is ‘digested’ by the artist and re-emerges in a variety of forms, including drawings, books, performances and workshops. Bel describes himself as a ‘bouncer’: he decides which ideas remain and which ones get rejected and what form they take. Humour is indispensable in this process.
Bel’s installation ‘Cabinets’ is like a museum within a museum. His personal collections are displayed in a ‘cabinet of curiosities’, which also serves as a podium for the artist and other invited performers.
