Beloved admirer of a high quality cultural process,
It’s wonderful to see you are still here. I wholeheartedly hope your relatives are in good shape as well, and if fate has decided differently I wish you all the strength you might need. During the past few months I have done my best to slither a path through the current restrictions as an earthworm would. We have had to bury a lot of projects, but as the earth is an earthworm’s natural habitat, I managed. The exhibition in the Van Gogh Museum has been extended, other projects are being worked out digitally, and somewhere in the story you will find a driving museum – all fully virus-proof.
So I managed. But not every artist is an earthworm at the same time. The cultural sector is being hit hard by the crisis at hand. With thanks to Mette Samkalden, I have been commissioned by Dutch labour party PvdA to design a poster stressing the importance of the arts, as part of a broader left-wing initiative called #RedDeCultuur (‘Save The Arts’). You can sign a pledge of support and/or purchase the poster here.
Museums around the country have only days ago reopened their doors and already are they filled to the rim with predominantly old people. In order to lure more young adults to cultural institutions, I am collaborating with Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and education centre Zadkine on a project during which students tell us what would have to change for them to visit a museum. A protest zone designated to each day bring different matters under the attention of passersby, a drive-in museum, legal graffiti on the outside walls. With the help of an illustrator, the ideas are bundled in a visual advisory report the museum will not be able to put aside easily once it has been presented, be it in person or online.
Because This Art Fair could not proceed in a usual manner this year, the most brilliant art fair director of the continent invented This Art Truck instead: art on a distance, figuratively and literally. Together with Mette Samkalden I brought art to those in need of it. Artworks of mine were featured as well.
This Art Truck has drove off for now, but my HIHI-bricks with nitrous-oxide patterns are currently being sold at the Cultural Supermarket held by Roodkapje Rotterdam. A lovely way to keep yourself well-fed.
When the day finally draws to a close I whip out my professional embroidery box™ and while I keep myself busy threading the needle, my new old ball of fur Willie lies by my side. We make a good team. The embroidery collection includes more than sixty designs now and they are selling like hot pockets so if you have not bought one yet, you might be falling out of touch with what’s good. Have a look on my website and on my specially incarnated instagram account and leave an order here. Do keep yourself up to date because there is quite a naughty fotoshoot coming up… Borduur du Boudoir, be ready for it.
Stay safe, xoxo Maarten and Hongaarbor
Blijf gezond. Xoxo Maarten en Hongaarbor
