[NL] Waar mensen zijn, zijn ratten. Door de geschiedenis heen zijn ratten altijd onderdeel geweest van onze beschaving. Toch staan ze bekend als ongewenste indringers die ziektes voortbrengen. Dit is niet helemaal terecht. Ratten zijn namelijk erg slim en sociaal, en lijken in hun gedrag en reacties best veel op de mens. Met Ratterdam Tours wordt het het publiek uitgenodigd aan boord van een varende rat, en langs de vele kades, restaurants, bruggen en andere potentiële rattennesten van Rotterdam geleid. De boot is uitgerust met fluistermotor en luidspreker met lokgeluiden van spelende babyratten. Terwijl het publiek met verrekijkers speurt naar ratten, vertelt Maarten Bel over de relatie tussen mens en rat. Hiermee brengt dit multidisciplinaire kunstwerk een eerbetoon aan de eeuwenoude metgezel van de mens, in een poging zijn negatieve imago te doorbreken.

[ENG] Where there are people, there are rats. Throughout history, rats have always been part of our civilization. Yet they have a reputation as unwanted invaders that carry disease. This is not entirely justified. Rats are in fact very smart and social, and in their behavior and reactions are quite like humans. With Ratterdam Tours, the public is invited aboard a sailing rat, and led along the many quays, restaurants, bridges, and other potential rat nests of Rotterdam. The boat is equipped with a whisper engine and a loudspeaker with the seductive sounds of playing baby rats. As the audience searches for rats with the help of binoculars, Maarten talks about the relationship between humans and rats. Thereby, this multi-disciplinary artwork pays homage to the ancient companion of man, to break its negative image.
